(Even if you’re not going there anytime soon cos, y’know….)
Y’see everyone is saying now is the is the perfect time to get cracking that project you’ve never started…. Or in my case, more likely this the perfect time to finish that project I’ve let slide. And when the highlight of a is baking a lemon drizzle cake (and one that I’ve been saying I was gonna bake for the last 3 days), what difference is a little more procrastination gonna make right? After all, we are in lockdown, the eggs will keep another day and there’s chuff all else to do.
So lockdown eh? That’s fun, right? I mean the endless waking up optimistically every morning, only to realise within about 30 seconds that there’s an apocalypse going on? Yup! So that’s just delightful…. for absolutely no one. And while it’s all too easy to get sucked into the 24 hour news cycle (GUILTY) sending constant gloom and doom rattling round your ears all day long, I’ve been trying to find some positive things out of this. Just to brighten the day. Granted, there’s not many of them about in these End of Days, but let me share with you 3 positive consequences of lockdown I’ve happened upon in recent days:
1. Pet sounds
Hey you? Hear that? No? What? The sound of that massive 76 double decker clattering down the road? Nope! Cos the buses are running a reduced service and so what I’m catching in my lugholes is a much stranger sound…. a rarer sound, in London at least, certainly round my way . A sound often drowned out by the hubbub of every day life… that of birdsong. And boy can them fuckers make a right racket. There’s one brown chappie who perches on the tree outside my bedroom window, I never knew of him in the past, but now every day without fail he’s out there, chirruping away like his little soul depends on it. And really that’s quite cheerful. And a great deal more cheerful than the dulcet tones of the 76 at thundering past at full pelt that’s for sure.
2. Bones, bones and more chicken bones
Now fear not, I haven’t gone so stir crazy in these 4 walls that I’ve taken up voodoo, not yet at least. No, you see where I live, it’s fried chicken central, and whether it’s Dixy, Favorite or Perfect, there’s more poultry round these parts than you can shake a corn cob at… and thus more chicken bones abandoned on the street as a result which Archie is more than happy to snuffle out (DIRTY humans!). But while Dixy is determined to keep on serving like some embattled corner outpost of a once great chicken empire, custom it seems (as well as locks) is well down. And what do less customers leave behind them? Less mess! But while I am understandably thrilled about this outcome, Archie is less than impressed. No more street feasts for him, and no more curbside battles with his vicelike jaws for me. I’m counting that as a win for me as well as for the street sweepers.
Ladies, y’know that bit at the end of the day? It’s the BEST bit of the day. That moment of ‘ahhhhh’ when you can really rela x, when you’re finally in the safety and security of your own goddamn home and you can finally take your bloody bra off. THAT moment. Well, as frankly awesome as that moment is, it is no more! Cos for all of us lucky ladies who are able to work from home we no longer have to be trussed up in an ill fitting bra, or indeed any bra at all! Our working days shall no longer be niggled by backs/ ribs/ chests/shoulders ache and we can SET OUR PUPPIES FREE! And frankly who can ask for more than that in a pandemic?
Now I do realise that in the grand scheme of things the opportunity to partake of a stress-free dogwalk, with blackbirds booming away to the rhythm of my bouncing boobies isn’t quite the world’s highest priority. But I do think that in times of crisis, it’s always good to seek out a positive. A little gleaming beacon of niceness and hope grab onto to steer our paths. So whether it’s birdsong, boobs, chicken wings or indeed anything else, I wish you luck in finding your beacon. It’s is gonna be a bumpy ride, and we’re all gonna need something to hold onto.
